Welcome

Dear Colleagues,

I am very pleased that the GVH – the Hungarian Competition Authority – has the opportunity to organise the 20th anniversary ICN Annual Conference. Organised in a virtual format, the event will take place on 13-15 October 2021.
This year the ICN Annual Conference will cover a range of very interesting topics that will be discussed by esteemed experts from the competition community. We will have the opportunity to overview the results of our 20 years of cooperation and to discuss the prospects for the upcoming 3rd decade. The conference will provide insight into the intersection of competition, consumer and data protection policies and into the special project of the GVH on “Sustainable development and competition law”, which we hope will be of particular professional interest alongside the diverse selection of interesting topics we will cover, such as post-COVID competition law enforcement, international cooperation in our enforcement practice and digitalisation, which have been placed on the agenda of the ICN working groups in the form of plenary or breakout sessions.
Following the tradition of ICN Annual Conferences, participation in the live events will only be possible via prior invitation. Nevertheless, we would like to provide all interested stakeholders with the opportunity to gain an insight into the work of the ICN; therefore, the plenary sessions of the conference will be recorded, and these recordings will be made available for the wider public on the conference website soon after the live event.
The Budapest 2021 ICN Annual Conference website provides comprehensive and continuously updated information on the event and on Hungary that I believe fulfils many needs.
Wishing you a memorable experience at the Budapest 2021 ICN Annual Conference.

Sincerely,

Csaba Rigó
President, GVH
Hungarian Competition Authority

Special project for the 2021 ICN Annual Conference: Sustainable development and competition law

Special Project
Participants of the panel

As the host of the ICN Annual Conference in 2021, the Hungarian Competition Authority – the GVH – chose ‘Sustainable development and competition law’ to be the topic of its special project.

As part of this project, the GVH conducted a survey among ICN members and NGAs on their experience concerning sustainability and competition law.

The topic attracted great international interest and numerous competition authorities (52) and NGAs (41) submitted their responses revealing available experience in this field.

Panel discussion on competition law and sustainable development

This panel discussion will be held on 13 October as part of the 2021 ICN Annual Conference.

The panel is based on the concept that participants will discuss and further elaborate on the current issues and the future of the relationship between sustainable development and competition law by sharing their own knowledge and by relying on the survey results of the special project of the GVH.

It is also expected to inspire the audience by drawing attention to the challenges, potential solutions, and good practices.

ICN 2021
The Hungarian Competition Authority (Gazdasági Versenyhivatal - GVH) started its operation on 1 January 1991.

The activities of the GVH in connection with the safeguarding of competition rest on the following three pillars, namely, competition supervision proceedings - the enforcement of the national and the Community competition law; competition advocacy - the GVH tries to influence state decisions; and competition culture - the objective of the GVH is to contribute to the development of competition culture by the dissemination of knowledge about competition policy, in order to raise public awareness of competition issues, and by the promotion of the development of competition-related legal and economic activities of public interest.
